The Garden of Eden |
1410 Tempera on wood St?delsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt The other tree in the Garden is that of Knowledge, which is also the Tree of Death. It is embraced by the youthful St Sebastian, whose martyrdom (he was tied to a tree and killed by arrows) may be related to the crucifixion of Jesus. The figures sitting in front are easily recognizable by their attributes: the Archangel St Michael by the monkey-like monster cowering at his feet, who is the vanquished Satan himself; St George by his knightly clothes and by the corpse of the dragon, the embodiment of earthly wickedness.Artist:UNKNOWN MASTER, German Title: The Garden of Eden (detail) Painted in 1401-1450 , German - - painting : religious |

The Garden of Eden |
1410 Tempera on wood St?delsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt Mary appears in her usual colours, blue and red. Her attributes are illustrated by the flowers richly carpeting the foreground (lilies and lilies of the valley = purity; rose = illumination; violets = modesty and humility) . These flowers, which were also used for medicinal purposes, frequently became connected with the person of the Madonna. In a fourteenth-century poem from the Netherlands, surviving in manuscript form, twelve different flowers refer to Mary, eight of which can be found in this painting.Artist:UNKNOWN MASTER, German Title: The Garden of Eden (detail) Painted in 1401-1450 , German - - painting : religious |

The Garden of Eden |
1410 Tempera on wood St?delsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt Into the picture of love and undisturbed idyll enters music as the Child Jesus, assisted by St Catherine of Alexandria, plucks on a psaltery. Beyond expressing harmony, music in this picture also refers to the divine nature of this human Jesus. The duality of his being is also intimated by a cherry tree - here substituting for a tree of life - with its twin trunk and bough, from which St Dorothy picks fruit.Artist:UNKNOWN MASTER, German Title: The Garden of Eden (detail) Painted in 1401-1450 , German - - painting : religious |

The Grandmother's Birthday |
1856 Oil on panel, 71 x 58 cm Royal Collection, Windsor Waldmeller was the most important Austrian painter of the Biedermeier period during the first half of the nineteenth century. Within his lifetime he established a reputation in America, and there was a major exhibition of his work in London in 1862. He was proficient in most aspects of painting - miniatures, landscape, portraits and genre. His career within the art establishment was successful, but not without controversy. Appointed Professor at the Academy in Vienna in 1829, he was an advocate of realist painting and of reform, which led to his temporary dismissal from the post from 1857-64. Nonetheless, Waldmiiller was an effective teacher, an influential theorist, and an immensely popular artist within Viennese society and at court. His success as a painter stemmed from his powers of observation, from his measured style and his wholly sympathetic treatment of subject matter. The accumulation and faithful recording of detail led to an idealism based on the subject matter itself, as opposed to one imposed upon it by an outside order, this being a vital distinction between eighteenth- and nineteenth-century art. Rustic genre was the last theme that Waldmeller essayed. The subjects he chose extolled the moral virtues of rural life, or, as here, the joys of family life. The care taken over the rendering of garments, the still life and the surroundings is offset by the radiance of the figures' expressions, reinforced by their gestures which create a circular composition of great tenderness. Waldmeller was well-versed in the tradition of the Old Masters and the composition has affinities with several paintings by Raphael of the Holy Family - the Madonna Canigiani (Munich, Alte Pinakothek), the Madonna dell'Impannata (Florence, Palazzo Pitti), the Madonna of Francis I (Paris, Louvre) and the Madonna della Perla (Madrid, Prado). Waldmeller's homage to Raphael, however, is seen through the eyes of Correggio. Artist: WALDMeLLER, Fedinand Georg Title: The Grandmother's Birthday , painting Date: 1801-1850 Austrian : genre |

The Holy Kinship Altarpiece |
1505-10 Oak, 144 x 187 cm Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne The central panel of the Holy Kinship Altarpiece depicts the Holy Kinship. The subject of Christ's relatives had been very popular from the beginning of the 15th century. On the left-hand wing are Sts Nicasius and Roch with the Cologne donor Nicasius Hackeney, who ran the fiscal administration of the imperial court; on the right are Sts Gudule and Elizabeth with the donor's wife, Christina (n?e Hardenrath). On the exterior of the wings are Sts Hermolaus, Achatius and his followers on the left, and on the right Sts Cecilia, Genevieve, Helen and Catherine, each with members of the donor's family. The altar was probably a donation to the Dominican convent of St Achatius where one of the donor's daughters was a nun. The artist of the altarpiece is referred to as the Master of the Holy Kinship. , UNKNOWN MASTER, German , The Holy Kinship Altarpiece (central panel) , 1501-1550 , German , painting , religious |
